Help My HTC Desire HD will turn on but only reaches the start up screen HELP!!

I got given this phone, its about a year old perfect condition, never been dropped or scratched. could sell as new. But however, it started freezing and not even pushing the power button would turn it off so i took out the battery and put it back in to restart it.

Its now been 2 days and it has done that several times but now when i go to turn it on, it will display the htc white screen and then the words quietly brilliant and then just go blank. from here if i try to turn on the phone using the power button, that doesnt even work so i have to take out the battery again!

please help me as i am incredibly frustrated here!!!

You can try removing the battery and putting it back in. When you turn on the phone, press volume down (and keep it down) and press power. You will get a funny looking non-touch screen interface.

Here you will need to use the volume button to navigate. Go to "Factory Reset" and press power to select. This will delete your personal data from the phone.

Well, they are on UK and US time, but it is a Sunday so they may not be checking today.

I would have suggested the same as ral - could you try that and let us know if it works?
