Root mystery memory hog. cleanmaster questions and bloatware removal questions.

Hi all,
I am new here, nice to meet you all... :-) I am hoping you can help me fix a problem with my phone.

I've searched the forum, I found some answers, and i already followed those tips.... but my device is still out of memory/storage. I have a samsung galaxy rugby pro running jellybean 4.1.2 it is rooted, but i don't have much knowledge about what i can do (or how to do it) as a result of being rooted.

there is a mysterious memory hog somewhere hidden from view, eating the internal memory.
I have gone into application manager, cleared caches on apps where able, moved "my files" all to the SD card, and I have looked at the storage description, which says i should have plenty plenty of internal memory left.

I don't have many apps that i care about having on the phone, but it is full of bloatware. I think i can remove it somehow because the phone is rooted, but i don't know how to remove the unwanted apps or which apps are safe to remove. Also, i seem to be missing at least 1.5 gigabytes of space that i should have free, based on counting the megabytes accounted for under "Storage."

Does cleanmaster work on jellybean 4.1.2? Should i use it? From reading a forum article "what task killers do and why you shouldn't use them" know i shouldn't use the task killer that comes with cleanmaster, but will it be easy to avoid it if i use cleanmaster? Also, what do i use to delete the bloatware, and how do i know which apps are safe to delete?
Finally, do you think watching videos on the phone could leave cached copies of them somewhere? there are no copies in my videos folder or anywhere i can see.

thanks for any help!

Welcome to our AndroidForums, Madison!

I've moved your thread over here to the Galaxy Rugby Pro all-things-root area where the folks that are familiar with your device and it's root particulars (especially what bloatware might be safe to remove and/or disable) can advise you best.

Cheers and thanks for joining us here at AF :).

I've never used Clean Master app, but yeah, I would advise against using a task killer--they've been largely unneeded since the 2.1 Eclair version of Android.

I suppose the videos could be kept by your browser cache which should be safe to cleanup (looks like Clean Master will point-out various cache that it can clean).

You will need to be very careful if you delete any apps (especially system apps) installed on your device just in case they are needed and/or co-dependent by other things running.

Typically it's best to disable / "freeze" an app instead of deleting it since it's easier to re-enable (or "thaw"). Normally, you'd want to take a Nandroid backup of your device before starting to make any tweaks to any system files. That way, you'd be able to restore things to a known, good state. Unfortunately, I don't know if your device supports a custom recovery, etc. (that's why you'd want to wait for the input of the folks that have direct root experience with your device). Folks that figure-out what bloatware is safe to remove usually have that as a safety net / fallback in case things go awry (i.e., better to be safe than sorry--you don't want a soft-brick on your hands).

Sorry I can't be of more specific help, but it's best to tread carefully when taking any root-related actions without having a fallback plan. Hopefully, someone will chime-in with some more specific advice for you.

Best of luck!

:)

Jellybean has a feature where you can disable apps, including stock system apps. As for the memory hog, generally it's media storage for the internal SD, and Photobucket is a huge contributor. For /data, it could be anything, but logs build up there as well.
