Root Need power button workaround in recovery mode

I am currently running CM7 on my captivate with clockworkmod. The power button stopped working several months ago. I was able to work around it by setting the power keys to wake up the phone, and by installing Virtual Button Bar. However, I haven't been able to do anything in recovery mode since the power button broke, because you need the power button to select options. I've tried taking the phone apart and wedging a folded piece of paper under the power button to make it work. I've even tried pressing the button under the external power button while I had the phone in pieces, but without success. I'm not due for an upgrade for a few more months, but I reeeeally want to be able to install CM9 on my phone. I'm also having some random inconvenient issues that I'm hoping CM9 would fix. Does anyone know a workaround for a broken power button in clockworkmod or recovery mode?
