Help Nexus 7 (2012) freezing

sbeauter

Lurker
I have researched this issue and only have found older thread. Up until three days ago my nexus was working fine with only minimal problems. Then all of the sudden the screen would freeze. The tablet loads to the lock screen and the few times I can unlock it I can't get far before it freezes and have to restart. Trying to start in recovery mode now. Any ideas? I want to avoid factory reset at all costs as everything is not backed up since I can't get it to not freeze for that long.

Welcome to Android Forums :-)

If a Nexus 7 suddenly develops problems when nothing has changed the first thing I'd suggest is to pop the back off and make sure all connectors are snug and secure. The original N7 has a bit of a reputation for connectors working loose, with all sorts of malfunctions as a result.

If that doesn't help we'll try to dig a bit deeper, but best try the simple (and easy) options first.

John thank you for your quick reply. I was wrong in the date, I originally bought this in early (February) 2013 if that makes a difference.

I am checking connections now.

I have opened the back, I found a silver square piece of the hardware that was a little loose. But, I am still having the same issue of freezing even after multiple re-boots again.

Just to confirm: this is a Nexus 7 (2012) - ie the original version? It doesn't really matter when you bought it but it is important to know which version it is.

I do believe it is the original version as the second gen was released in July2013 and mine was purchased in February of 2013

If it has front and rear cameras it's a newer 2013 model. If it has a front camera and no rear camera it's a older 2012 model. I have one of each and they have been trouble-free.

Have you installed a lock screen app or lock screen widget? Anything else that might affect lock screen operation?

No I have no lock screen widgets installed or anything of the like. The few application culprits I thought I deleted and still same issue.

I (almost) never recommend doing a factory reset, but unless you can find some app that could possibly be guilty, a reset might be in order.

You need to seriously start backing up what you can, You mention you do not want to hard reset because you do not have backups as it's not stable enough BUT you have to start doing something in small pieces before the tablet possibly gets worse.

I'm inclined to agree that a factory reset is probably the best option. It's a bit drastic but will unequivocally show whether the problem is down to something you installed or a hardware fault.

Backups are something we don't think about until we need one and don't have one. Been there, done that, still got the scars :-(

Never again though! On my rooted N7 I use Titanium Backup which creates its backups on the internal "SD card" but the whole SD card gets backed up daily by the excellent SyncMe Wireless app, which I also use on my (unrooted) Nexus 4 phone.

I know this is too late for your current problem but after you get it sorted please consider using an automated backup system so you never have to go through the same worry about data loss ever again.

Well I have done the factory restore and it is still doing the same thing of freezing and now it then shuts off. I am going to take it to a friend who does repairs and see if he can find the issue.

Yes, it sounds like a hardware issue. With any luck it will be something simple like a bad connection that will be spotted by an experienced technician.
