No "peeking"/pop up notifications??

Omar Days

Android Expert
So, just received my 6p, and I've noticed that when I get a sms, or fb messenger notification, I don't get the brief drop down notification for them anymore.

I've checked the settings, and it's the same as my old nexus 5 which did this no problem.

Anyone else experiencing this?

I don't have the 6p so I can't comment on that. I just wanted to say that it's called "heads up" notification in case that helps you find more information.

I'm thinking the Nexus menus are your biggest problem.

I have a Samsung S5, and pretty good on its' menus.

got my daughter a HTC One M9 and uh, oops, it is a foreign land almost.

I have to really scratch around to find the things she asks me about.
She is new to Android, used to have a Windows Lumia phone.

You can go to 'Apps' and set this individually for each app.

For example I have the drop down for my SMS messages through Messenger, but I turned off Peeking on Hangouts.

Excellent feature

I saw this on my phone last night.. You're right, apparently it's called peeking notification. I always had heard of it as heads up and had never heard the term peeking until now. :D

FB messenger doesn't support that then. I don't get that on all my apps. Just the ones from Google. Apps like Textra can do it, but that's because its a feature they built in

@Omar Days are you getting any notifications for FB messenger? Or just not the peeking notifications?

Have you checked the settings within the messenger app to make sure notifications are enabled?

Yeah, getting the notifcation, just no "peeking". And yup, all notifications are enabled etc.

Chances are facebook needs to update the app to work properly on marshmallow

It was already doing it on Marshmallow, albeit on the nexus 5 though.

So I know this is a late reply but I've found a solution! Note: I found this solution on Android 7.0 Nougat with my Nexus 6P so I'm not sure how this applies on Marshmallow or other devices.

On Nougat, enable "System UI Tuner" by long pressing on the gear icon on the Quick Settings panel. "System UI Tuner" will then show up in settings above "About Phone. " Go into System UI Tuner and then go to "Other" and you will see "Power notification controls." Tap that and then turn it on. From there, if you long press on a notification in the notification shade or go into notifications in settings you can give each app a priority ranging from 1-5. If you select level 4 or 5 the notification will always Peek. (5 allows peeking when in full screen.)

I've always had the problem you listed and it's been a major pain. Peeking would work at first and then quit working. It took me ages to figure a good solution.

Another note: Since this is not an easy to access feature one can assume its somewhat of a "Beta" feature. It works fine 99% of the time for me so far but I've noticed a couple small bugs but it's definitely worth it.

Enjoy!
