Root No signal cellular signal when restoring to original firmware using ROM manager

Hi,
I have a Motorola XT5 (Z71). Before installing any of the ROMs I made a backup of my system using ROM manager.

Here is the sequence of events as I remember them, you can skip to the end if you like and decide whether the details in between are relevant or not later.

I tried installed SuperAOSP 8.6. After the installation I didn't have a cell signal.

I then installed FireTrap JellyBean. My phone had a cell connection but it seemed to drop out after about 24 hours of the phone being on. I had to restart the phone to get the signal back. This never happened with my original motorola firmware.

Next I tried using the ROM manager to Restore my original firmware. I installed ROM manager, installed clockworkmod, and selected the option to restore the backup I created in step 1.

It installed correctly but when my phone booted it still had the FireTrap logo at the very beginning of the boot sequence, followed by the Motorola splash screen. I also had the no signal problem with the original backed-up firmware.
I tried entering the clockwork mod recovery mode and doing an advanced backup of the boot and then system, still no signal.

Not being happy with JellyBean (due to the signal dropout) and not being able to use my original ROM because of the no signal problem I tried cyanogenmod stable 6.1.2 - still no signal.

Desperate to be able to use my phone as a phone, you know, for making and receiving calls, I installed the Phantom King 2.2 rev 4b.

This morning I thought I would try reflashing to my original rom one more time, installed rom manager, clockworkmod, ran restore, no signal and the phantom king boot logo was there at the start before the motorola splash screen came up.

So this is my question?
How can I restore my phone to the original manufacturer firmware using the backup image I created prior to installing any custom ROMs? When I try to restore the backup the Phantom King boot logo is there at the very beginning before the Motorola splash screen appears.
Besides this unexpected behaviour, the phone starts ok and all my applications are there, but I cannot get cell signal.

I promise once I get my original firmware back I will never install another custom ROM again :)
