Root Official CM Kernel?

As of 8/27 the CM changelog says "This is the first CyanogenMod build of this type for device vs980". The background is that I'm running the JackpotClavin version of CMmod. The oddity being that the official build requires the old kernel from JellyBean and the JackpotClavin version uses the new Lollipop kernel. The problem is, once you've gotten onto something with the new kernel, flashing back is difficult. I'm basically wondering if it's safe for me to let the JackpotClavin version of CM update itself to whatever the new official nightly is.

I answered my own question. Since the regular CM updates starting coming across, it seems as though the kernel dependency was updated. I decided to go for broke and just install the latest nightly. Turns out it worked. Still love this phone...
