They work alright but I personally was much happier after remapping the Vol+ and Vol- buttons to be the back and menu buttons.

Volume widget (there are a few) from the Android Market works well. It's not good for "on the fly" volume control but IMO it is better to have dedicated Back and Home keys than dedicated volume buttons.
