Root OTA ICS Update with Root - Won't Install HELP!

My gf's dad has the NexusS 4G. I unlocked the bootloader and rooted it for him. He is running the 2.3.7 Gingerbread software.
He has been prompted to install the ICS update, but everytime it gets 25% done, the update fails. I heard this is due to the root access.

Can someone help me figure out how to install the ICS update with root... or how to unroot without losing all data?

I just re-rooted my phone this weekend. If I were you I wouldn't root the phone until after you did the ICS update and make a backup. That way if you ever have to take the phone back to sprint, you can revert back to it and it'll appear as if you never rooted.
