Help PC connection issue

Hi guys. Slight problem...I've set the Conect to PC options to disk drive as default and checked the "ask me each time" box, but I can only charge through my PC's USB port. The phone doesn't show up as a removable disk and I don't get the option to select the connection method when I plug the USB cable in. It's also stopped the device being recognised through the USB port in my car stereo. Probably something simple, but I don't know what it is! Thanks in advance.
 
OK...bit of a n00b moment. Forgot the Desire is more like a PC than a phone so I went for the old "turn it off then back on again" method that has served me so well with Mr. Gates' offerings throughout the years. Job done.
