Help Phone gets really hot while using navigation (google maps)

Hello All,

I have India edition HTC One X with 4.1.2 I do not have data so sometimes I get the directions on wi-fi and head on the road. Then it connects to the satellites and guides me further. I charge my phone at the same time so that I do not lose too much battery in this business.

In 2 instances, I noticed that the phone got too hot (REALLY hot) near the camera region (on the back side). Anybody has an idea what the heck is going on?

More information,
- No major (processor intensive) background apps were use at that time
- The phone was not on the car dock or car mode. I was not driving so was holding it in the hand.
- After holding it in front of the air vents for about 10-15 min, heat was gone.
- I don't remember exactly but phone was probably searching for wi-fi

Thanks in advance.

This happens to my phone when I'm charging while using GPS to navigate, in a car where the phone isn't getting any cooling from the air vents. A good way to check if your phone is overheating is to look for the notification light. If your phone is overheating a lot, it will flash red and green, warning you that you need to stop what you're doing or try and do something to cool it down.

Charging while navigation would heat up my One X too ... but it doesen't get too hot because it's mounted above the car's air vents :)

I using a Brodit mount.

So I tried this under various circumstances,
- Mounted / Unmounted
- Charging / Not charging
- Short route / long route.

In all 6 instances above, it got hot. So I don't think it is either of points raised above. It CERTAINLY is inside the phone that does not work as it should be when you are using navigation. Not too sure if processor has to work hard to keep the phone connected to satellites or something.
Or
It could be a design flaw itself with A-GPS section or the software running that part of the phone. I don't know.

It of course cools down, if I hold it against the air vents but that is not really how I should be using navigation device, right?

Otherwise no complaints with the phone, but this point rather poor job by HTC (It will be my last HTC phone anyways).

One thing to keep in mind is that GPS is very resource and battery intensive and will heat up the phone. All phones will heat up when they are being pushed, and GPS (pulling gps signal plus map information and processing all of it) definitely counts as pushing a device. Unless you get the flashing green and red light to tell you that your device is overheating, you have nothing to worry about.
