Root Photon 4g Root questions. please help..

hey guys, new to rooting. I recently got a Photon 4g and just rooted it the other night. no problems, root went well. Just a couple questions.. now that i've rooted my phone is 4g disabled (not that it matters because 4g isnt available in my area) Will my phone still receive ota updates or should I avoid them, im currently running android 2.3.4. and finally does installing custom roms disable some functions of the phone and if so can I backup my entire phone to the sd card before attempting a custom rom install in case its not for me? any help would be appreciated. thanks!

Welcome to Android Forums!

I moved this thread into the "All Things Root" section of the Photon forum, since it pertains to the rooting of your Photon. I believe this is where you will find the rooting wizards that can help you most.:)

Rooting your phone will not affect 4G, as it doesn't change the stock ROM. You'll still have all the functions you had before, only now you can tinker with the file system more (and use root-only apps, etc.) Custom ROMs will likely impact your 4G, depending on which one you install (to my knowledge, many do not have functional WiMax/4G). As for backing things up, I suggest you read through Lokifish's excellent compendium for all things root and ROM.

To the OP;
From your description it sounds like you are unlocked. The way to tell is to reboot you phone and look for "Unlocked" at the top of the screen. I'll try to clear up rooted vs unlocked as best I can.

Rooted= Working 4G, the ability to remove bloat, Use My Universal Live ROM Conversion, Flash LOCKED ROM's using boot strap, make changes to the system partition. These custom LOCKED ROM also allow you to use custom themes. None of the LOCKED Photon ROMs affect 4G.

UnLocked= You lose 4G but retain everything above. You also gain the ability to use custom kernels, overclock and undervolt your phone, use Webtop replacements like Ubuntop, use a custom recovery to flash UNLOCKED ROM's

*note* you can be unlocked an not be rooted as these are to separated things

ROM's LOCKED vs UNLOCKED- Locked ROMs are mostly custom themed stock with minor enhancements. UNLOCKED ROM's are generally highly tuned and designed to be paired with custom kernels to get as much performance out of your phone as possible. Performance could mean increased speed or increased battery life in in some cases allow the ability to use GSM service in the U.S. Not to come off as arrogant but the first deciding factor in choosing a ROM is would you use Ubuntop? Not webtop but ubuntop.
