Is this a setting that can be changed? I didn't think my Samsung S2 was originally configured that way. But now when someone sends me a picture via text, it comes with a play button and I can't zoom in or out, etc. Is there a way to configure messaging so that incoming pictures come in just as regulr pictures?

That's up to the sender. You can't do anything about it. If they send a picture, you receive a picture. If they send a picture with comments then you get an video. You can select menu and save the attached pictures though.
This is how the S2 has always handled pictures received by text.
You can download an SMS (text messaging) replacement app such as Go SMS Pro, Handcent, ChompSMS, Textra, Pansi SMS, Ninja SMS, etc. All available on Google Play.
I personally use chompSMS. I tried GoSMS Pro, Handcent, and Pansi but for the functions I desired, chompSMS best met my wants/needs.
