I was watching the football game tonight and saw a droid commercial that they are basically saying they know the phone is ugly and they built it that way on purpose. Do you think they knew that it was ugly when they released it or are they just agreeing with all the reviews and now trying to say they meant it to be that way?

pretty soon they are going to have a commercial on how they mean to put a worthless keyboard on it.

the funny think is i was on my wayt to make this post and then i checked out engadget and saw this

well i am a man and i like manly things but i dont like ugly things. sure it is just a phone and i still like it and use it but i think that they should have tried to market it to all audiences and probably sold a lot more.

if they are refering to the iphone as a princess i would rather be carrying a princess around with me and not something ugly :) (no i dont want an iphone)

I don't know why but that phrase really cracked me up. +1 for the alliteration.

yeah the commercial made me laugh a little but i think i am just a little mad at motrola for making an almost perfect phone but just falling short. if they would have put some thought inot the keyboard and didnt make it so fugly this thing could be close to perfect

So i guess the commercail is saying that men like ugly things? :)

i think they would have sold a lot more phones if they didnt make it ugly by design and didnt have the shitty keyboard on it.

I don't think they are saying the phone is ugly in that ad.. I think they are trying to go after the the "haters" that are implying the phone is ugly in comparison to the Iphone, and countering it by saying..

Do you want a phone who's priorties are astethics first, performance second? Or the reverse?

In case anyone is keeping score, I don't find the phone ugly at all, and I think the built in keyboard is fine as well. It's not the best, but it gets the job done better than a lot of other phones I have had with much worse keyboards..

the looks have grown on me a little but to be honest with you the first time i saw the phone i said there is no way i am getting that just because of how ugly it is and how bad the keyboard is. the keyboard is a small step up from the on screen keyboard but if you have ever used a phone with a good keyboard its makes this one look/feel realy bad. i am trying to teach my self to use it because i know once i get used to it it will be faster.

I wish i had a positive attitude like you :) i am to much of a critic and point out what i see :)

A critic?? You just sound like a baby.. What you are pointing out are your own opinions. Sorry not everybody shares the same ones as you. I love the look and feel of my droid and I think that it is perfect. Not everyone is going to feel like I do and that's the point of having different style phones..

What I'm really wondering is why such an astute critic would buy a 'fugly' phone with a worthless keyboard????? Did you just get it so you could bitch about it? Clearly you are not the demographic of this phone.. I think you are confused

i love the fact it looks different then everything else it's unique.

Same here. The slide out keyboard needs just a tiny bit of bevel but as for the over all looks I'm quite pleased. I really didn't think I would either. All the blogs and ads made it look ridiculously bulky and ugly but it really is a slick looking device in person. I guess the camera really does add ten pounds. :)

"i think they would have sold a lot more phones if they didnt make it ugly by design and didnt have the shitty keyboard"

Ugly with a shitty keyboard? Darn, I didn't even notice. I hate the phone but not because of what it looks like. I hate it because I waste so much time finding things it can do. I hate it because I can't forget it when I leave the house, because when I remember that I forgot it I need to turn around and go home and get it. I never had that problem with my bb. I hate it that it weighs more than it should because of that keyboard (real men don't need physical keyboards. I hate it because it's after midnight and I'm still playing with it.

Now I love it because it's so Droidlike and manly. I was planning on getting an omnia 2 for months before it was rumored NOT to be coming out until q1 2010 so I shifted to the Droid. Even went in today to check it out. Very fashionable, great looking screen, looked like a lot of those other princess phones. I would have bought the Eris before that one. Actually the Eris is my second favorite phone. Just to pretty. Nice marketing job moto! You made a man's phone and it works!

Dude....if you want a fugly phone, take a look at my old i760. The Droid looks like a fuggin supermodel next to that phone. Just goes to show beauty is in the eye...yada yada. I think the Droid is the sleekest, 'sexiest' (if it's possible for a phone to be sexy) phone I've ever owned.

But then again, even if the Droid was as fugly as my old i760, I still would have bought it....because I'm a man, and I wanted the Droid for the workhorse that it is.

Ahhh, yes... this phone is definitely pretty, to a geek... I love the lines of this phone... it's the perfect size to fit in a front pocket, the keyboard is functional, and I find myself using both keyboards equally as often... I too am sitting here past midnight playing with the damn thing because I just want to see what the hell else Droid Does... =)

By the way, Jewellust is an addicting game... stay far away from it unless you want to play it for hours and days on end.

They aren't saying that the Droid is ugly, or pretty. They're saying it's a functional tool - NOT a fashion accessory. They're saying that form should follow function, not vice versa. They're saying DROID DOES.

I like the "trades hairdo for can do". I'd like to offer another trade: i-can-dee for i-can-do.
What he said. Every word of it.

I just saw the ad, for the first time, over at engadget. I think it's a swell commercial, and it definitely appeals to me. :D

I have yet to see a Droid in real life (if it ever gets released in this backward country I live in), but I can say this much: I have a Galaxy, and I miss a physical keyboard! I mean, the on-screen one is too tiny to use while still eating up too much screen area to leave a useful UI. It might well be a Droid (-like) phone for me next time.
