Help Problems with wifi

Ok brand new here, just came to Android from iOS. Super glad I did.
So I'm on Virgin Mobile with a HTC One V. I noticed that if my phone has wifi switched on, I dont receive messages of any sort. When I switch to 3G, I get a flood of messages. Also when WIFI is turned on, my apps run WAY SLOW. And this usually occurs when I am in an area with great wifi service.
Whats going on here?

No I do not. It is the strangest thing ever. No text's are received/sent, and no notifications received with wi-fi on. This is starting to bother me!

Hey, I've read your post twice and I've checked and I don't see anything in the settings that would effect this. I'm on Wifi basically all the time and get all messages and notifcations, so something is not right, you might have to get with VM and possibly get a new phone.

I'm just posting this message to you sort of as a welcome also.

I'm also on VM, came from the Optimus V to this HTC One V. For the most part very happy with VM, this phone just takes a little getting use to.
