Root properly rooting 2.2.2 Ally without downgrading??

GWILKS

Lurker
hey all, i recently decided to root my Ally (finally) but cant seem to come to the right way on how to. ive searched a lot through a buncha forums and dont have a solid answer. plus almost all of the threads were over a year old.. so hoping there maybe is a newer/easier way?

all i want to do with the root is delete bloatware and maybee run Velocity.

ive seen not to use one click apps such as z4root and SOC because they may be inclined to risks that can be avoided by rooting the right way.

then i came across the gingerbreak method, saw mixed reviews on that.

the 3rd way i saw involved downgrading to 2.2.1. i seen a few of them, and that they were usually the recommended ways, but i do NOT want to factory reset and lose all my internal memory data.

so basically is there anyway i can safely root my ally while keeping 2.2.2? or can i somehow backup my internal memory so i am able to do the downgrade method?
note:not looking to pay for anything, all free apps is what im looking for

heres some my info if it helps:
Version: 2.2.2
baseband version: VS740MVE.6040.1001
kernel version: 2.6.32.9 lg-electronics@aloha#2
build number: FRG83G
SW version: VS740ZVE

As an addition note, once you use a custom rom such as Velocity, Stormdroid, Bionix or Frunisher you will wonder how you ever used an Ally without them.

Have you had 2.1 at any point? If so you have fastboot already and are safe to use a one click root.

ive had the Ally line since march 2010 i believe? but now that i think about it i forget what happened. i know i either got a new one from insurance, or had to factory reset it due to an issue? but that was still a while ago that happened. does anyone know when the 2.2.2 came out? or how could i find out if i had 2.1 before?

also, which one click roots are worth a damn now? i tried z4root like 2 weeks ago but found out thats been blocked since last update

yes ive been reading a lot on this and that seems to be everyone's response to it lol so, DO WANT

if you have the same phone from march 2010 I'm sure you had 2.1 and would have fastboot. If at any point you were unable to move apps to the SD card than you had 2.1. Personally I have used Z4root as well as super one click to root and they both have worked for me. Once you have root access you will need to get a custom recovery before you can flash a custom ROM like velocity. use http://androidforums.com/getitnowmarketing/330813-all-one-recovery-thread.html to get one, it may look hard but its actually super easy. Before you start the guide you should download terminal emulator from the android market because you will need it in step #5. If you get stuck somehow there are a lot of guys in the community that wil be willing to help you out

It doesn't really matter cuz I've moved in from the ally but I used to have 2.1 before I upgraded to 2.2 and I never had fastboot at any point. I rooted with Gingerbreak 1.2

hmm ok ill try that super one click out next. i tried z4root about 2 weeks ago but the 2.2 blocks it. if SOC is a no go, then the gingerbreak would be my next try

would you mind shedding some light on what exactly that costume recovery does? or why i need it? and if i mess up is it harmful to any of my files/data?

A custom recovery will provide a handy interface for making backups, wiping your stock rom and flashing a new one. What type of files or data are you worried about losing? If your data is saved on the SD card or synced with Google it will be there waiting when you boot up your custom rom.

ya im not worried about the stuff on the sd card. its the stuff on the internal memory on the phone. basically all my settings, internal apps and their settings (GO launcher EX because it has a ton of settings i tweaked, juicedefender ultimate and Screen Shot It because i got them from black market, dont feel like redoing that.)

You do know you can root it, back it up with Titanium Backup, follow the LGNPST guide to get you access to fastboot if you don't have it already (if it came with anything other than V6 you don't have access to it. It's a good idea to have access to it) then just reflash a ROM and restore those things, right?

+1 to this. If you have any thoughts at all about loading velocity or any other custom rom, you will lose your data unless you use Titanium Backup. or something to that effect. This only works on rooted phones.

no, i didnt know. which is why im here, asking all these questions like an asshole lol but i have an upgrade coming up. dont know whether if its in march or may. if march, then ill just forget about rooting this and try to do it on the new one maybe

I would personally root and mess with the Ally first, newer phones are harder to root and rom in general since they have locked bootloaders etc. The Ally is a GREAT device to learn how to do this type of stuff on first.
