Root Restore options - original GB vs custom?

Quick question re my soft-bricked phone. Only had the phone (ATT- Cap) for about 6 months so there's only phone numbers to maintain (no docs or history I'm worried with). Should I flash a stock GB when my jig comes in, then flash up to custom? Or can I flash right to a custom rom? Wasn't sure if I neded to get back to square one or not.

I had a couple of issues rooting when I wasn't on a stock, up to date version, but once rooted, than anything goes.
