don't you need at least a class 4 card? i thought the stock ones were class 2
Actually class 6 is what is recommended for good results. I also read some war stories of people frying slower cards (permanent read /write errors). I'll pass for now.
Just wanted to make an important point about SD cards and speeds for those considering this mod.
While the theoretical benefits of having a class 6 or higher card for apps2sd and swap suggest it would be worth the investment, the Droid has a hardware limit on the system bus to class 2 transfer rates.
This means any internal transfers between the card and phone will not show any improvement from the higher rated cards and the speed of the swap on the card is likewise limited.
This is not something that can be changed or "fixed" at the kernel or OS level at all, although I have it on good authority from one of the original engineers who worked on the Droid that this can be modified
"with a bit of luck and the right low level access" and I have discussed it with Taz(SGX) and others at DM and they have it on a back burner to look into.
As of now though, this is an absolute limit on the system bus and will have a significant bottleneck effect on these mods as a result. You will see higher transfer rates with faster cards between the card and your PC if you use it to store a lot of media that you change often. So that may be a factor in your decision to purchase a higher class card, but until someone does some really tough work with a Beagle Board or other JTAG type of debugger, there is no solution for the problem.
I don't want to rain on everyone's picnic and think this is a major advance for us in the Droid world, but I did want to make that point clear so people's expectations are not unrealistic regarding the performance achievable at this stage. Very few users and even devs seem to be aware of the issue, unfortunately.
When I first got my Droid, I tested the included Class 2 on a PC and benched it against a Class 6 I had lying around - the stock Class 2 was faster by a decent clip, something around 20MB/s vs 16-18MB/s.don't you need at least a class 4 card? i thought the stock ones were class 2
Interesting...same issue appears on cameras, where transfer speed can be limited by the bus more than the card speed.
well that is just two (2) 16GB boards stacked on top one another... accessing it to read/write is still limited to that same bus that a 4GB would use. Therefore there is no performance value for a higher capacity card above 16GB. The only advantage is you have more storage capacity. So that's the scoop on the Class Ratings and Sizes. THere is a new format coming out soon where this will change so standby...
