Root Rooting my HTC EVO Design 4G??

jfalbino

Newbie
OK, Ive searched on here for info on how to root my EVO Design 4G, but I have found 2 ways to do it. My question is, is i just want to root my phone so I can tether my phone as a modem, and one site tells me how to root one way with adding JB, and there is one here that shows how to root with Apache Thunder. Which process should I use?? I just got the phone a couple of days ago, and havent activated it to my account yet. Do I need to activate it first? and do I need to have the debugging mode activated to do either of these processes? I really just want to tether, and I dont need to do anything else. I have the software downloaded for both processes, I just would like to know which one I should use. Thanks in advance!!

I didn't want to be rude and not reply since I clicked and read your post but I've got nothing. :D
But fear not.....someone will have an answer for you.

To just add tether and no custom roms or anything, you should be able to just unlock the bootloader through HTCdev, put a custom recovery on the phone, then flash superuser. Let me go dig up a couple links for you :)

Okay. Well, the only recovery for your device appears to be CWM recovery and it has been removed from the location I keep finding it referenced... There may be another version of it you can use (Hero S is also "KINGDOM") but I don't want to have you flash a recovery experimentally because I have no idea what would happen if you flashed the wrong recovery. I suppose you could boot the recovery temporarily instead of flashing it to the phone, but even then, I have no idea if something bad could happen.

I found this root tool that is compatible with the Design, but it says it will not work on the newest software. Since that update was over a year ago, I assume you are on it?

At least take a look and see. Sounds like an easier method anyway, as bootloader unlock isn't a prerequisite.

Yeah, being that I just got the phone, I'll assume that software 1.11.653.0 710RD is the newest one?? and if it isnt, then if I can do this, should I dl the software, then activate the phone before I start?? and do I need debugging on? just some last minute questions before I attempt this. Thanks for the quick responses!!

From the page of that tool:
3a) For less headaches, make sure you're running Software v1.19.651.1 released 11/03/2011 or older. Software v2.12.651.5 released 01/19/2012 cannot be rooted with this tool.
The new version is 2.12.651.5 and it says that it will not work on that update. Check your version in settings>about phone.

So if you cannot use that method, we either need to find one that works, or beg someone to give you the recovery :)

Speaking of which, anyone willing to upload the recovery.img to dropbox or similar?

You need the recovery.img from this .zip?

boosthtcdesignevo4g-root.zip

https://www.dropbox.com/s/5tjcwojudch5cvh/recovery.img

Pulled from the .zip ----boosthtcdesignevo4g-root.zip

From this site he reference earlier:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2194102

That thread looks like it's been updated last month.
And I think the op will have to download the entire .zip (boosthtcdesignevo4g-root.zip) because it has the fastboot.exe files and all the other files needed to run the commands in fastboot.
Check it out when you get a chance Brian. :)

Looking at it closer, I believe that is the guide he needs to follow and if he downloads that .zip, ( it will have the recovery and all the files needed, even the SU .zip. Not just the recovery from it. Agree?

That link also has a rom and gapps if he desires to flash it.

I tend to add stuff as I think about it, sorry.
:)

Thanks Mike. I hadn't looked thoroughly through that link yet :o the recovery was there the whole time.

It looks good to me follow all the steps and then stop after flashing superuser. That's all you need. The jellybean part is optional and will only happen if you choose to flash it. Superuser will allow you to do what you want ;)

I was waiting for a reply to the debugging and if I can do this without activating the phone. Ill try it tonight if I can, if not then Ill try tomorrow. Thanks for all the help. Im assuming because the version is 1.11 instead of 1.12, that I can do this. If I can root it before I activate it, it would be easier for me because I only have access to wifi tether through my Hydro. But if I have to activate it, Ill need to make sure I have everything downloaded.

Sorry, yes enable usb debugging and probably turn off fastboot in the power settings as well.

If you are version 1.11 it suggests you be on 1.19 or later but not version 2.12. You can certainly try though.

OK, I tried to hook it up to unlock the bootloader, and when I select either other models, or evo design (sprint) it lets me select start unlock bootloader, but it goes no further. just shows an icon showing the page is working. i let it run for 10 minutes and nothing happened. I charged it, and selected debugging mode before I started. Should I not have debugging activated? and I should also add that I did not activate the phone either.

Are you talking about from the htcdev website or bootloader unlock through the root tool? I'm pretty sure usb debugging should be enabled, i don't think activation will matter. Did you disable fastboot?

When attempting to unlock did a pop up appear on the phone screen?

use the root i posted. you dont have to do anything else after that. its simple and the easiest.

Brian, yes I was talking about the HTCDEV site. it wouldnt do anything. I did not have fastboot disabled, but I will try that and post the outcome.

Okay it sounds like their website is having issues. It happens quite a bit. Clicking the unlock bootloader on their just takes you to the instructions, it doesn't actually unlock your bootloader.

Can you not use the root tool? Bootloader unlock isn't required for that.
