Rydeen DV638A & Google Play Music

Corvette

Newbie
So I just bought and installed a Rydeen DV638A in my car. It's an in-dash receiver running pure Android, specifically Froyo.

Been using it for a few days and I absolutely love it. Would recommend it to anyone. It's got a Cortex A7 processor, is very quick and responsive, and it boots up in just a few seconds. It also comes pre-loaded with the Google Play store and has access to most Froyo compatible apps.

I've got virtually all my Google Apps installed. Drive, Movies & TV, Keep, etc. all of these work flawlessly. What is annoying me is this. I have Google Play Music installed, but when I click on it, it launches the stock music app. No matter what I try I can't get it to launch Google Play Music instead of the stock Froyo music player.

Since I have all my music on Google Play, I'd like to fix this, but I really don't want to attempt to root the unit... anyone know what I could do to solve it?

Hi,

how is this unit performing for you so far?

The unit performs quite well. Having owned it for several months now I can't really say anything bad about it. It's as responsive as I could expect, and it boots faster than any of my other Android devices, most of which run ICS or higher. And, since I worked out a solution to the problem I identified in this thread, I haven't ever reconsidered my purchase.

If you buy one, you'll want to do the following things:

Root with Z4Root (this was totally easy and painless! Select permanent root by the way, no sense doing a temp root)

Use a quarantine app (otherwise known as a freeze app) to quarantine the stock 'Music' app. This will prevent it from opening. I would not suggest uninstalling it completely, as you might lose some of the dependencies you need to play music in other apps.

Install your favorite music player app. If you want to use Google Music, the latest version in the play store will download but will not work on the device. Download and install previous versions from apks until you get to one that works. Don't worry, it's not the old school Google Music, you still get the new style app but you have to make sure it's the right version or else it won't let you past the intro screen.

Download and install 'Market Helper' which is a user agent switcher for the Google Play Store. Disguises your unit as a mainstream Android device (Galaxy S3, HTC One X, etc) and will give you access to many more apps in the Play Store that aren't officially supported but probably will run.

There are a few more things I intend to do to make the unit completely ideal, and some of those things are hard considering you're working with the now very deprecated Froyo but with that said none should be impossible.

There are other units out there (Chinese no name but really the same manufacturers) and they run ICS / JB. I'd imagine these can give you more flexibility with apps but then again I really doubt you could root them so easily as this one.

Corvette;
I'm really interested in getting the next generation Rydeen DVA6 android nav unit, but I'm curious about your DV638A. About how long does it take from a cold boot till the FM radio is usable? Also, can you run CPU-Z and post what processor manufacturer is being used in your unit?
