Help Screen Not Dimming During Call? Functions/Apps Variously Start When on Phone Call

I searched for a resolution, but I really didn't know how to word the search, or my question! But here goes:

My phone is a stock LG G2, VS980, running Lollipop 5.02. Everything has always been really great with this phone, however (and I believe this started with the Lollipop update), when I'm on a phone call with the phone to my ear, various functions often start up. Such as, just a few minutes ago my Bluetooth turned on during a call. It's as if the screen is not always dimming when against my ear, and my ear is starting up functions and apps! I never know what I might see running after I take the phone away from my ear. This is a daily occurrence. I've gotten into the habit of always checking running apps, and battery usage for running apps after a phone call. Has anyone else experienced this? Any known fixes?

Thanks!

Hmmm... searching the Internet, I found several references to the proximity sensor. I found that if I place my hand over the top half of the screen, the screen does dim, but only slightly. This is whether I have selected automatic brightness control or not, and if manual, at any brightness level. Can the proximity sensor be calibrated?

You are covering the ambient light sensor, not the proximity detector.
The proximity detector is used to blank the screen when you have the phone up against your ear while talking on an
active call.
