So what works best for you for this particular phone? HTCs have been pretty good with widgets but haven't done much reading on the subject on LGs. What are your thoughts?

I purchased Beautiful Widgets when it was $0.10 on Google Play. I like it because it gives me an HTC style clock/weather widget without having to have Sense. And there are free clock and weather skins available that allow the user to customize the widget's appearance.
I also use a widget called S2 Calendar widget that gives me a small widget connected to my Google calendar. I have it set up to display a 2x1 sized version of my work schedule.
You might want to consider trying the GetJar app, as it will allow you to download for free apps that you have to pay for elsewhere. Granted they are usually one minor update behind and can't be updated, but it's a great way to try stuff out before buying it.
