Root [SOLVED] HTC Desire - Bricked - no other options?

Hi all,

Just to clarify before anyone complains at my post. I have been through countless: forums, videos and websites to find a solution but have come to a dead end every time.

I have the original HTC Desire (Bravo). I haven't used it in some time since I bricked it a while ago. I tried then to fix the phone but it took up so much time I gave up. I've got to the point where I thought now I should probably un-brick it and try selling it on (or give it as a first phone for a kid) because its just collecting dust.

The current state of the phone is as so:
- Hold power button it boots to the first white HTC screen and just hangs.

- If I hold volume down and power it will boot to HBOOT and details are as follow:
AlphaRev Sense
BRAVO PVT3 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-6.93.1002
MICROP-051d
TOUCH PANEL-SYNW0101
RADIO-5.11.05.27
Aug 10 2010, 17:52:10

As you can see I have run so much on this trying to fix it before (and when trying to root it in the first place), what with getting it to S-OFF, HBOOT version changed, RADIO version changed, etc.

Sadly I no longer have any of these files, which I found annoying earlier as some sites say its best to create a goldcard, or boot with your ADB Driver (no longer have this installed either)

I have tried today to re-install drivers using HTC Sync, then also tried uninstalling and making sure the ADB driver installed itself with USBDeview (a very handy tool!) but still nothing. I can get the HTC Android Phone USB Device driver to install - but running a RUU that I have downloaded has still come to a dead end.

I'm sure I must be missing something really obvious but just need the guidance. Most posts I read keep saying it to put phone into USB Debugging mode, however the phone won't ever get to that stage - but last I remember is that was set anyway (I do that with all my androids (because most are not on Stock ROM's anymore anyway))

ANY guidance and help at all will be most appreciated. If you want anymore info that I've missed then shout and I'll get back to you.

Thanks in advance people!

What happened to get the phone like this? What were you doing at the time?

From that first screen (vol down & power off) can you get into recovery or fastboot?

If it was previously running ok & you can get into recovery the first thing to try is clear cache & clear dalvik cache. Then try to reboot.

Hi nicka3200,

At the time I was trying to root the phone, can't remember which ROM I was trying to put on it I'm afraid.

I can get onto Fastboot that seems fine, Recovery however doesn't seem right. It gets to a black screen with the image of the phone and a red exclamation on it - after rooting my Samsung Galaxy S3, I'm aware of this sort of screen as a sort of error screen. Apart from this it does nothing so I can't clear the caches unfortunately.

Any suggestions of what to do in Fastboot then?

That sounds like it might be the stock HTC recovery. Presumably you used Revolutionary to gain S-off. Did you install a custom recovery?

To be completely honest, I remember trying a lot of different things until it got to this stage, but no idea what recovery I left it with. I'll try flashing a custom recovery then and get back to you if there's any more issues.

Not too bothered either way to be honest. Although my plan was to just get it back to stock. Shouldn't be a problem should it?

Ok, call me an idiot but my laptop doesn't seem to like this phone as it won't install the drivers for the phone, anywhere I can get them? Using HTC Sync doesn't seem to be a great help

You can get the hboot drivers here.

  1. Extract your hboot driver files somewhere you will remember.
  2. Boot into Hboot screen (from off, hold volume down and press power)
  3. Connect Desire to PC (the screen will then show "HBOOT USB")
  4. Right click "My computer" > Manage > Device Manager
  5. Expand "Other Devices" in the right-hand pain and locate "Android 1.0 device"
  6. Right click on Android 1.0 and click Update Driver Software
  7. Click on Browse my computer for driver software.
  8. Click on Browse and select the Android USB Driver folder you extracted earlier (press OK to any errors received and Close when complete)
  9. Check Android Bootloader Interface is listed under Android Phone in device manager.

***Please note, This Hboot driver only works correctly when the phone is in the Hboot screen. If the device is not at the hboot screen, the driver will not show correctly as essentially the device is not present.

When you have your drivers installed you should be able to follow this guide to return to stock. You will need to put the PB99IMG onto your sd card using a card reader or by putting it into another phone.

Ok after about a thousand tries later, I give up...it completely dislikes the drivers on this computer...might give it a go on another computer tomorrow...for reference my laptop is running Windows 8, I have a desktop machine which is on Windows 7 so I'll give it a try on that tomorrow

Hi nicka3200,

I have just run all of your previous instructions on my Windows 7 computer and have successfully rooted my HTC.

Looks like that was my issue this whole time...bloody Windows 8 (which is made even funnier today, seeing in the news that Windows 8.1 was pulled from the store because it screws up the boot and other things - glad I didn't update to that I'd be even worse off haha).

Thanks very much for your help nicka3200!
