I know this probably should be in the "All things Root" section, but thought I'd share it here...
My Ascend G510 phone was slowing, bogged down with apps chewing on the 393MB of available RAM. The phone would often lag at the most simple of tasks, such as sending a text.
Being rooted, I installed Android Tweaker 2 (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bam.android.androidtweaker.two&hl=en) and applied the Auto Tweaker -> Performance + Safe tweaks. Also zipalign (whatever that does?) all apps (before any move to sdcard).
Then downloaded the most awesome app Andromizer (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.j.y.daddy.customizer&hl=en). The bees knees. With this little beauty I was easily able to apply 10% zRAM swap (kernel must support it), which is great for 512MB (and less) devices. Find that under One-Touch Kernel Tweaks. Applied it so that it always enable, after reboot (Fix). Applied the Tools -> One-Touch Optimize (all options) and then set Memory(RAM) Settings to Appropriate settings (though One-Touch Optimize should've/would've set that anyway.
Having these tweaks on this low end 512MB android phone has made it much more responsive. Even with CM Security with all options (find phone, real-time protection) enabled and the bog that is Facebook app running, it's responsive with available RAM. Happy times
