Help Strange problem: Nexus 7 won't charge, causes PC to shut down

A coworker brought me his Nexus 7 (2012) because it wouldn't charge or turn on. I have read all about these tablets failing to charge, and about how holding the power button for at least 30 seconds usually fixes the issue, but that doesn't work on this one. When I plug it into my computer with a micro-USB cable, nothing happens until I start holding the power button. When I hold the power button, the tablet doesn't do anything, but the computer suddenly dies. It doesn't freeze or go through a shutdown sequence; it just turns off. When I plug the cable into an AC adapter, the tablet still won't turn on. Nothing seems to be getting hot; no blue smoke or funny smells. I removed the back cover, and the battery looks perfectly normal. The only thing that looks a little weird is the micro-USB connector; it looks a little bent. I think that might be the problem; I think it might be short-circuiting and grounding something that's not supposed to be grounded. Does anybody else have any suggestions? I just wanted to get some advice before spending $30 on a part.

Thinking out loud here I would suspect the micro usb port as well and that it is shorting somewhere due to the pc shutting down. Probably need to replace the usb connector if its bent its more than likely lifted the solder pad from the PCB take a look at it with a mgnifying glass see if you can see anything amiss close up.

Thanks, Chappie; turns out we were right. After replacing the connector, the tablet charged up and worked fine. This experience has reinforced my observation that in general, Android devices are much easier to work on than Apple devices.

I'm hoping this is my issue too. Ordered the charger / headphone flex cable yesterday. $29.00 on eBay. I couldn't see anything amiss, but I'm guessing it was solder issue as when I applied pressure to the usb connector when it was plugged in it would start charging, then stop when I released pressure.

Now I just have to make sure not to drop the ridiculously small screws when I take it apart. :)

I'll also be more careful when plugging in going forward . . . sucks that they are so prone to this issue.

Good luck, Jeresh. It's really not hard at all. A tiny piece of double-sided tape or a very small dot of superglue will help hold the headphone jack bezel in place; don't forget to transfer the old one over to the new jack. To release the old flex cable from its connector, flip up the black tab on the connector. Don't forget to flip this tab back down after installing the new flex cable. Other than that, there's really not much you can mess up. And magnetizing your screwdriver will make it much easier to deal with the tiny screws.
