Help Stupid question about signals, 3G, G, etc

Ok so rang Orange today & told them I'm still having problems.

He checked the system & there is still congestion on the mast & there is no definite timescales for it being resolved. Surprise surprise.

Told him this wasn't good enough & I was paying for a service I wasn't getting half the time.

Offered me 10% discount on line rental for the rest of the contract (21 months) which I'm happy with (for now).

If it drags on though I'll ring them again for another discount.

OK, that's a result. Glad to hear it. Thanks for reporting back.

I'll update this thread when I have my desire back.

I got a 25% discount with 3 making it 15 quid. they have only charged 10 for the last 2 months though

Well, my desire is back. Collected it from Carphone Warehouse yesterday, now have it with all my old apps on it again and it's jolly good to have it back! It had made a trip to HTC for the repair (Carphone Warehouse told me that they only check desires for water and drop damage before sending them to HTC, but then contadicted themselves by saying that they do some minor repairs themselves.)

Interestingly, while it has the same IMEI number (indicating that the unit I have back is certainly the one I sent), it has a new MAC address. I suspect they changed the network card (or equivalent) in an attempt to rectify the problem.

And did it work? I don't know yet. I have good H signal at home (and use it on WiFi while here anyway), so will have a go tomorrow when it is only on a 3G network.

I'll keep this thread (and Orange, and e2Save - who I bought it from) updated.

Hope it works for you Oli.

For what it's worth mine is still exactly the same. Tweeted OrangeHelpers today who said that the issue with the mast was still there (tell me something I don't know) & there was no timescale for it being resolved.

It is starting to do my head in to be honest as just today 2 calls went straight to Voicemail & I received 4 texts all in 1 go some of which had been sent 45 mins before.

It simply isn't good enough.

Ian,

Thanks. I'll keep this thread updated with what I find over the next couple of days.

Initial impressions are that the phone is a bit slower (typing this using swype isn't quite as good as I remembered it to be) but I wool see how I get on.

It will be interesting to see what they come up with Oli.

The other thing to note is that it isn't just people who live in London who have posted problems up.

Interesting what you say about the hardware issue though never thought of it like that.

Orange have left me a message today saying they are unable to discuss technical queries by email so guess I'm gonna have to ring the call centre which should be an experience!

well my signal is still as bad with 3uk on 3G but guess what: they have got rid of 2g so now when it drops, it drops. Missed 3s call back so they emailed me with some tips. One was sit near a window

Well well well. I've just come off the 'phone to ... guess who ... Orange!

Called 150. Spoke with an offshore call centre. Asked to speak to a UK call centre, as I was told would be possible. Was told this wasn't possible. Kicked up a (polite) fuss. Suddenly it was possible, and I spoke with a UK call centre.

Problem (with a bit of a recap): No data when on 3G. Phone says "3G" on the screen, showing (I assume) that there is a 3G signal, but data transmission is zero. Orange had told me there was no problem with their signal, it had to be my 'phone, so I took my 'phone back to the CarPhoneWarehouse to be repaired. They sent it to HTC, who 'repaired' it, and sent it back to me 2 days ago.

This morning, in N13 area, I tried to connect to 3G. It connected, but data transmission was zero. I tried to make some telephone calls - none of them connected (three of them were to three different landlines).

This evening (just now), in the E3 area, I tried to connect to 3G. It connected, but data transmission was zero.

Lady at Orange immediately said it was the handset. I said that no, it wasn't the handset as it had just had clean bill of health from HTC. She checked with their technical teams who said that there was good 3G signal in the areas I mentioned and therefore it wasn't their fault. I said it wasn't a question of signal, it was a question of data. Oh well, she said, it could be the SIM card. She would send me a new SIM card, and talk to HTC about whether there was as known fault with my handset.

So, she will call me back on Monday afternoon. In fairness to her, she sounded genuinely perplexed that there was a problem and at a loss to explain it.

I also pointed out that when I called a month ago (gave her date and time and name of the person I spoke with), I had been promised a 50% reduction on my bill for that month which hadn't materialised. She denied this conversation had taken place, and said that there was no-one by the name I gave working in their call centre.

So, let's see what happens on Monday afternoon. It has all ended up precisely as I expected; I really don't believe there was ever a problem with my handset, nor that there is a problem now, but am willing to play their game until they run out of answers - or solve the problem. I will, needless to say, be angling for a VERY large discount from every single bill for the rest of this contract if it turns out to be anything but my fault.

I'll keep the thread updated.

Oli,

Keep at them mate, they are clearly talking nonsense.

I guess my problem is slightly different than yours in that Orange are admitting a problem with the network i.e. congestion.

My frustration is that there is never a date for it to be resolved & I'm extremely skeptical that if it does ever get fixed that will sort out the issue.

The problem is network related & the sooner they admit that the better for you.
