Sugar: The Bitter Truth (By Dr. Robert H. Lustig, M.D.)

I'm neither a health nut or guru, and I do have a sweet tooth.

I've followed news and trends over the years and kind of thought that in terms of overall weight, a calorie is a calorie is a calorie.

And while no one has ever argued that sugar (or corn syrup, high-cructose or otherwise) is good for you, I didn't realize that it is actually a toxin. In the body it breaks down almost identically to ethanol; biochemically, fructose is ethanol...without the buzz. Fructose is a carbohydrate and it is metabolized like fat (30% of ingested fructose load results in fat).

So I'm going to try and follow the basic steps outlined in the video, which runs nearly ninety minutes. He does the O-chem stuff as well if you are interested, but even if you aren't you'll come away at least a little stunned, I think. He's a great speaker, too.

This is a salient point he makes just over an hour in: "When you consume fructose, you're not consuming a carbohydrate, you're consuming fat. So everybody talks about a high fat diet? Well, a high sugar diet IS a high fat diet. That's the point. That's exactly the point."
