Help Sync probs

I have a nexus 4 and my problem is syncing my phone.I constantly have a message saying "sync is currently experiencing problems.It will be back shortly" but its not.The last date i have for a sync of my contacts is 13/03/2013.
I don't know if it is linked to the fact i don't even know where on my laptop the contacts are saved and if they are even saved on my laptop.

Any help on either issue would be greatfully received.

Does your Nexus 4 have working internet access? Can you log into your Google account?

Google contacts are not saved on your laptop. They are saved 'in the cloud' to your Google (aka Gmail) account.

I can log into my account but dont use gmail,i use hotmail

I once had that happen for several weeks with my primary Google account.
I ended up deleting and re-adding the account, and it synced fine after that.

Doesn't matter if you use Gmail, you don't have to, use whatever. But if you enter contacts on your phone and save them as Google contacts they should sync to your Gmail account and be viewable there on a computer. The phone manual will explain in detail.

Anyway, the phone does have working internet access, correct?
