Syncing calendar and contacts?

Hey ya's.

I'm new to android and I'm struggling with setting up my calendar and contacts. I'm trying to work out the best way to have them sync for me, and hopefully end up only having one of each on my Galaxy. At the moment I have 2 sets of contacts and calendars - my standard ones which sync with outlook, and my google ones.

I've never used google accounts before. I only set them up when I got my phone. My outlook syncs with my google every few hours (I'm guessing that contacts and calendar). I don't see the point of having 2 sets of contacts and calendars on my phone when they are basically the same. What is also happening is that I'm getting double ups of appointments showing, especially in outlook after it sysncs with the phone - it must be getting the appointment from the phone and then another of the same one from google.

For contacts I do like having my groups, which it appears isn't an option if I use google contacts.

So what I'm hoping will work is to use my phones contacts as my main contacts and delete the google ones from my phone. I don't add contacts often so if it only syncs a few days with outlook then that's fine.

For my calendar I'd like to use the google calendar as it's more important to me that they stay updated. My wife can have access to my google calendar so she can keep updated, and me updated. If I do this and sync my google calendar with outlook then I'm guessing I won't need to sync outlook and the phone through kies?

What I am wondering is can I just delete my google contacts? And can I remove my default calendar. With the calendar, I know I can just select to use the one calendar, which I've set as the google calendar. But when I make a new appointment there is an option to select which calendar to use, and it seems to default to the phones calendar, not google calendar. I'd like it to default to google, but I can't see how to do that. It's a pain having to select google calendar every time I make an appointment.

Anyone got any thoughts? (no comments about the novel I just wrote, I just can't do things the easy way) :D
