Text message notifications on Galaxy Portal

Hello, I am sure there must be a simple answer but I can't seem to find it! I got my Samsung Galaxy Portal yesterday and when I get a new text it makes a sound but I don't get a display on my screen. So if I miss the sound, or it is on silent, I have to actually go into the messages to see if there is a new one. Is there a way I can get new messages to display on my screen?

There is a notification option in settings that needs to be ticked. You then get a little smiley face in the top status bar when you have an unread one.
