Text Reflow and Selective Permission Denial

rkl122

Lurker
I upgraded from the S3 to the S6, and like it so far, but I can't find a couple features that were on the S3. Anyone know how (without rooting):

1. Get text to reflow when you zoom in on an email. ie. After a manual zoom, I'd like the text to auto-fit the screen so you don't need to scroll sideways to read an email. (I'm using K9, but the default app didn't do it either.)
2. Selectively disable particular permissions - this feature was in the Application Manager, on an app by app basis in the S3. Not in the S6.

Thx, Ron

I think #1 will be app dependent. I use the gmail app and it auto-fits most of the Emails (there are a few HTML ones that for some reason do not always resize correctly).

#2 - I didn't realize S3 had that - assuming you are referring to disabling specific permissions for a particular app - that is a new functionality that Google introduced with Marshmallow 6.x last year. Whenever the S6 gets marshamallow, that option will show up. (since you said "without rooting", I'll skip the root options)

Thanks for the response.

On #2, I should have said "Permission Manager" (an app available from the play store). On the S3, it provided the facility to selectively remove particular permissions from an app. On S6, all it does is open the Application Manager (which doesn't provide that capability). I think I've read that the ability to selectively delete permissions was removed between the S3 and S4. BTW, my S6 tells me that the current build, Android 5.1.1, is the latest. What determines when the S6 gets 6.x? I'm surprised there aren't more people complaining about this loss of functionality. (Why does Twitter need to access my camera, for example?)

On #1, I'll keep searching, but note I'm not referring to simple autofit or simple resizing. By "reflow," I mean both simultaneously - the wrapping of text at whatever zoom level you set so that the side boundaries are within the screen. I'm using the same mail app (K9) as before. It did reflow messages on the S3, but not on the S6. Here also, I'm surprised not to see more complaints.

Thx again for responding.

ah - permission manager! That makes more sense.

See, before releasing the "open to public" permission controls in Marshmallow, Google had started coding for it in Kitkat/Lollipop - it was called "App Ops". It was not fully functional, and it was not supported by Google. Think of it as a beta version (or alpha version) of true permission manager that was released in 6.0.
It was not directly accessible - but people figured out how to access it (the permission manager app, or AppOps etc).

I suspect AppOps may still work on 5.1.1 - or maybe it needs root - I don't know for sure - I don't have a 5.1.1 device anymore.

S6 "should" get 6.0 - but no ETA as far as I know. It depends on Samsung making the update ready, and if you are in the US, the carriers have to approve it). But when you do get 6.0, the permission control is a supported feature (It can still cause problems for 3rd party apps that have not correctly used the permission control feature, and some apps may block you from using the app if you deny it certain permissions)

Regarding your Email app issue - you may want to send a note to K9's support Email and see if they can help address the issue

....I suspect AppOps may still work on 5.1.1 - or maybe it needs root - I don't know for sure - I don't have a 5.1.1 device anymore....
After perusing user reviews for AppOps on 5.x, I'll pass on loading it and hope 6.0 is released soon for my (Verizon) S6.

Many thanks for the explanation.
