It was felt clear to Tahoe and as far south as Monterey.

So far, thankfully, no known loss of life, one serious injury to a teen, more than 200 others injured.

Lots of damage, plenty of fires due to broken gas lines...many of which were uncontrolled because of broken water mains. :(

Many buildings destroyed, including lots of homes. Wineries in the area saw lots of damage and loss. The pictures are striking.

Earthquakes are scary and unpredictable. And they wake you up wondering...how close, how bad, are we next?

I hate when stuff like that happens. I didn't know it had happened when it did since I don't watch much tv.

I knew IMMEDIATELY what this thread was about just from its subject. :D

What amazes me is that this was the biggest earthquake in the area in a QUARTER CENTURY. I remember the Loma Prieta quake so well (I wasn't there, I mean just from news coverage), and it surely doesn't seem like 25 years ago. But hearing it referred to over and over again as "a quarter century ago" makes me feel really old.

I'm glad there were no deaths, and most injuries weren't terribly serious. An earthquake of that magnitude in other parts of the country, or world, would result in huge loss of life because they don't have the strict building codes we do here in CA.
