The local Best Buy sold me a Toshiba Thrive today. Any Questions?

Lurker
My local best buy sold me a 16GB Toshiba Thrive this evening. It's in my hands. Have any questions about it?

Awesome man! How do you like it? How would you compare it to other Tablets? I have been somewhat thinking about the Thrive.

I went into my local best buy with the intention of buying a 16GB transformer as I had decided on that over the gSlate I evaluated. I then noticed a sealed 16GB Thrive on the checkout in the computer section. I asked casually if it was any good, and the guy said they just got it in today and said he heard good things and that I should buy it and report back. :D

Anyway, I'm very impressed. The build quality is excellent. There is a 'soft rubber' backing not unlike the material used on my Sensation on the back of the Thrive. It is fully removable by just using your finger nails. This exposes the battery which can be removed. The OS seems more responsive than the gSlate and Transformer both of which I spent about an hour each with. Display-wise, I uploaded some photos directly from my Canon 5D using the full size USB port and compared to my calibrated Cinema HD and I was shocked and how well the default calibration of the Thrive compared. Being a photographer I'm sensitive to color. The display does not appear to be IPS, but rather a very high quality TN.

Ya know, that full size USB port is a completely under-valued feature.

Happy for you though and glad you are happy with your Device. I've been waiting on the Thrive, HTC Pucinni, & Xoom 2 to come out to kind of *compare*.

The full sized USB, full size HDMI, full size SD and the removable battery are all pretty unique features of the Thrive that could make it a good option for many people.

Thanks for the info and congrats on the purchase. Glad to hear about the screen as there has been a lot of speculation. Enjoy!

Second that on the display. So it is not yellowish and washed out as some have reported?

Odd how a Best Buy had one already.

Added: Just checked around the web and still no tech site or Youtube hands-on besides the recent event that had some. VERY odd for Best Buy to have one and none out and about, considering the high profile of coverage so far.

OP must have lucked out. Cool.

I do not find the display at all yellowish. I did make a comparison to my calibrated Cinema HD IPS display and they were similar in color and accuracy. I do not want to say it was perfect, but far better than any portable device I have.

I decided to go back to the best buy today, and they had about 20 of them up on the storage shelves. I did not try to buy another. The guy who sold me mine asked me how I liked it. Of course, I'm highly impressed. :) I asked if any had sold yet, and he said he thought it was funny they weren't advertising them and shrugged. *g* Pics attached.

Cool your BB had them :)

trehe1, what type of screen does it have acrylic or gorilla?

Thanks for the review and pics. By the sound of it I did good to preoder and wait for the Thrive. :)

No problem :) The screen is undoubtedly glass. It feels very similar to other gorilla glass and gorilla glass-like surfaces I have touched.

Now try to remember that we need the following information
wink.png

1. Screen brightness
2. Any screen issues such as light bleeding, dust or dirt under the screen, screen seperation, dead pixels
3. Any keyboard lag and if so on which sites, browser, or forums
4. Which keyboard you are using or moved to if you find the default as not up to par
5. Battery life
6. Heat issues
7. Any WiFi issues
8. Any stuttering when watching YouTube or movies/games
9. Any yellow screen as has been reported from the land down under with their units

Does Gingerbreak 1.2 work on it so Titanium back up can be used?

How strong is the wifi signal? That was a glaring weakness of the A500.

Does ut feel a lot heavier than other tablets in comparison? That's my main concern.
I find it feels about average for weight. It is undoubtedly more comfortable to hold than most tablets. I found the Samsung 10.1 a bit more svelte, but more tiring to hold than the Thrive.

1- The screen is very bright. However, I tend to adjust it down to ~20% for the comfort of my eyes.
2- No light bleeding at all surprisingly. I had an LG G2X suffer from some nasty bleeding so I look for it. No dust at all, no separation, and no detectable dead pixels on a white or black screen.
3- I did experience a bit of browser weirdness when accessing the UI of my company's application. It caused the browser to become unstable.
4- I am using pure defaults, and have not replaced the keyboard or any other inputs.
5- Battery life is good, I have used it for the better part of the day on the web, games and such, and still have 45% remaining (It's ~4:00p here)
6- No heat issues at all. I played that tegra racing game for about an hour and did not notice any heating at all actually.
7- No wifi issues I have detected. In fact, it picks up more wifi access points that my Nexus S and my wife's Sensation.
8- No stuttering at all. Even on full HD youtube movies.
9- I have no observed any yellow in the screen. The screen's overall cast if anything is slightly warm (red) by my eyes. I have it next to a calibrated Cinema HD display, and it compared quite well.

My Thrive is 100% factory, plus some apps I've loaded. I haven't tried Gingerbreak 1.2.

Wifi looks great, and appears better than my Nexus S and my wife's Sensation. It is easily comparable to my Sony Z-series laptop. I have not noticed any drop outs, and it detects many APs in my neighborhood.

How is the back camera quality?

How is the response of the touch screen?

Does the back groove surface get dirty or any particles stuck?

Can u compare the thickness to a magazine or something?

Can u provide more photos?

I called the local best buy and they said they do have them but can not sell them until the 10th. I went to the store to see if I could spot them in the storage but didn't see any.E

My camera battery is dead so I can't take pics right now. I can say that the screen is on par with the xoom but not the galaxy there is no yellow tint. It does not have the typing lag that the galaxy 10.1 had, and it feels lighter then it is.
