Root Thinking of rooting my I7500, Odin question

Considering rooting my I7500 because I fancy having a play around with Galaxo/GAOSP.

Had a little search and im still not quite sure why I need Odin? I've rooted my Desire know how to nandroid/flash roms from the recovery on that, is it not possible to do that on the I7500?

Yes, it is.
You must flash custom recovery via ADB and then you will get an option to root the device in recovery (anyways, installing the recovery is necessary).
Or using easy root.
