Thoughts on the Droid X and moto bricking it?

Ok so apparently the Droid X will have some software on it called eFuse that will brick the phone if any sort of attempt is made to mess with the bootloader. This has caused Cyanogen and his team to swear it off and it looks like it will not only NOT be able to have any sort of custom ROMs but will more then likely not even be rooted.

So was just wondering what you all thought of this? I don't have the articles handy but there are a bunch floating around out there if you do a google search. It seems that Moto is now firmly against the moding community and has come out and said that they will not allow any more of their phones to have unsigned bootloaders.

My opinion on this is that I'm going to start looking at HTC and Samsung when my contract comes up for renewal. Unless of course we get a new Google phone that will be available for Verizon...

Edit: I know that there are other threads about this but I wanted to get the reaction of the people here in this section. Since you know we are all rooters here... :)

+10000 Fortunately I LOVE my droid now...lol
I thought the efuse was a hardware thing though..not software?

Yep. I love my Droid now, but technology is changing in phones. I'm saying screw Moto right now and I'm making my move to the Samsung Fascinate when it releases. I'm keeping my beloved Droid probably even afterwards, but I'm going for the Fascinate. I've seen in the Galaxy S part of the forum that it's been rooted already.....That's big signs.

Here's another good sign: http://opensource.samsungmobile.com/index.jsp

Just imagine if we can get Pete, CM Team, Chevy, JRummy and more devs to work on this phone. Samsung supports open source. Now I know updating TouchWiz is the only downfall, but shoot, who says we can't run Vanilla Android until they do....

My wife just called me (because she can't keep a secret) she was going to order the Droid X for me today and because of this thread and a quick Google search I told her absolutely NOT.

THANKS!!!!!

Good move!!! Saved u from a lot of disappointment lol

It definitely make me move to another brand. Good thing Android is supported by so many phone makers.

Guess this just makes me Droid last a lot longer!

Uh oh... sounds like the iPhone 3gs. But that was still jailbroken. I'm not too worried about it.

I'm happy with my droid... but the X is still going to be a beast of a phone. Rooted or unrooted. Tell her you'd love one, try it out, and if it cant be rooted... sell it. ;)

I hear you but my Droid running CyanogenMod 6.0.0 RC-1 at 1.2GHZ (Stable) is a beast. I have no reason to waste an upgrade until I know it can be rooted.

There is NOOOOOOO WAY I would be able to sell it if I let her buy it for me....I would never hear the end of that....lol :D it's different if I stop her before she buys it.

I wonder how many of these will be sold to people that dont know its locked and then just return it within the 30 days because they found out. what a mess VZW will have on thier hands

I wasn;r a fan of the droid X before all this does is solidify my dislike for it. Too big, I dont like the moto custom look.

Well if it is too big fine, but the custom look can disapear with launcherpro or other home screen replacement.

From here on out when shopping for a smartphone the size of the development community dedicated to hacking it is one of my top criteria. Sure awesome hardware is a must, but if I can't make that hardware do what ever I want.... forget about it.
