Tony Stewart (RIP Kevin Ward, Jr.)

I used to follow pretty closely many forms of auto racing, but starting around grad school...well, who has the time?

I've recently been reading the stories about the horrific death of Kevin Ward, Jr. after he was bumped by Tony Stewart, damaging his car and ending his race for the night. Kevin exited his car and in a darker area of the track, he ran down lower on the track, apparently to express his anger about being bumped. He got closer to the line as Tony approached and ended up being wrapped into the right rear wheel of Tony's car, killing him.

For his part, Tony has said he didn't see Mr. Ward and that he was very distraught about what had happened. He withdrew from the main race the next day.

The authorities are looking into whether Stewart may be criminally charged in relation to Mr. Ward's death, and Kevin's parents are understandably distressed, making noises about what Tony must have intended.

Stewart is a veteran driver, and I certainly don't know him. However, in the abstract it seems to me that for him to intentionally have tried to drive into Mr. Ward as he walked on the track, he would, in part, have to be a monster as part of his personality. And as long as he's been around, if that were the case it certainly would have been more apparent in many ways before now. That said, I do think he probably intentionally bumped Mr. Ward's car; that kind of thing goes on all the time.

For anyone else who's been following the story, what do you think?

The bumping of the car may have been intentional; regardless, that happens.

The fatal hit? That was 100% Kevin Ward's fault. Sprint cars are not easy to maneuver, and visibility is very limited, especially laterally.

The moral of the story is, do stupid stuff, get stupid results. There's a reason you don't walk onto a race track.
