Root Trying to repair the wife's Defy after a failed upgrade attempt

After having updated my Defy to cm7 several months ago and having no problems, my wife finally decided it was safe to let me upgrade hers.

I proceeded root the phone, installed bootmenu and ClockworkMod Recovery, loaded the zip files on the sd card and then went on to try and flash it. Once in the recovery mode I realized it was giving me "Unable to Mount sd card" errors.

After some searching here I realized that she had never upgraded her phone from the stock 2.1 to the OTA2.2, which several threads said would prevent the cm7 upgrade from working. So I rebooted and went to do the OTA update, which I am sure all of you can guess failed because I forgot to unroot the phone before I did it. But now, even after I have unrooted, I still get the triangle with exclamation mark in it everytime I try the OTA update.

Is it still failing because the custom bootloader and recovery is installed, or did all my missteps mess something up? I can't flash any other rom because I can't access the sd card while in recovery and I can't get recovery to work because I can't get hte OTA update to complete. I also haven't found any instructions on uninstalling the custom bootloader and recovery to see if that helps. I hope I am not as stuck as I think I am. Any help would be greatly appreciated (by myself and my wife!)

Thanks
