Unable to hear caller w/o using speaker button.

Have you made sure that the call volume is turned on/up? While in an active phone call, try pressing your volume up button on the handset and see if the volume goes up.
You should also be able to adjust the call settings in the sounds portion of your settings menu.
If your volume is indeed turned up and no sound is coming from the earpiece, your speaker may have stopped working. In this case you will want to take the phone in for repair or replacement.
