Help Update to Android 2.3 - too many running applications

Have just upgraded my x10 to Android 2.3 (from 2.1)but it has got worse than ever.

No matter what I do, I get a lot of applications running in the background - to name but a few - shop, device monitor, digital clock, google services, but although I stop them they still keep coming back.

Ideally, I would like to remove them completely from my phone if anyone has any ideas how to do this - I don't need them nor will I use them, but is there a way that I can stop them once and for all - until "I" ask them to be used. Happy to download an app if anyone can recommend a good free one which will put pay to these once and for all as they are reducing the charge in my battery considerably.

Thanks in advance

It is recommended when upgrading to do a factory reset (essentially wiping out all that old stuff)

Backup your contacts and do a factory reset in the phone menu.

Apps that you installed in 2.1 are not all 100 compatible with 2.3. 2.1 to 2.3 isn't really an upgrade. It is a full reinstall. You should do a factory reset ot get all that old stuff off of there.
