Help Updating Android version?

TheAnt317

Lurker
When I first bought this phone, I understood that it came with Android 2.3 operating system ("Gingerbread"). But since the latest version is now 4.2, I was looking to update it, which I imagined would be as simple as updating any version of anything on my computer. I Google'd how to do it, checked my phone settings which allowed for new versions of Android to be updated and I figured that would be it.

However, it never did update. I can't figure out any way to manually update and so, I am simply wondering how to do so on my AT&T Avail.

Thanks! :)

The Avail will never see more than Gingerbread... Officially that is. You'd have to build the source code with Avail specific parameters.

i was able to download jelly bean launcher to the avail/merit from the play store. At least it looks better and i didnt have to root the phone. I just did not allow auto updates, and took stuff i dont use like google plus down to non updated status, since i cant disable or delete it. All at no cost.

yeah, you can delete anything on the phone you don't want--even to your harm lol

just root it and you will have full control to do whatever you want to your phone's filesystem

Hi this phone cannot be upgraded to the latest version of android. Before you root the phone or trying to upgrade the phone this will make your phone out of warranty period, where you won't get any help for repairing. Think about that.

and so what?

i have an unroot update that can be installed from any recovery. also the phone can be completely restored to an unrooted state with a nandroid.

these are no longer limitations for this device and haven't been for some time now.

Android is only limited by hardware... While the Merit/Avail would hate life running anything higher than 2.3, it can to it. Just think, if a G1 can do it, so can we.

I've recently bought a ZTE Merit and I was just wondering how I update it?

theres nothing as of now.

out of ideas has a very nice ics mod available if you are into that

in secrecy i'm working on a true honeycomb port--msm hc kernel source is however vastly opposed to the way zte devs wrote their code. pia

or install one of my roms, and then install the latest gingerbread gapps

I do admit, out of ideas ICS version does look great. I installed it on a friend of mines Zte Merit last night despite my trying to get her to wait until he updated it as he said we should. It does indeed have a nice appeal to it.

Stayboggy, can I ask you if you have any advice as to why the Merit reboots constantly? I've installed the TouchNav as well as the deox merit zip that was suggested by out of ideas. Must say both were great....but Im still rebooting constantly (not as much) but its still annoying. Could you advise me. Im no where near the experience that you and others have and Im open to anything. Pleaae?

the stock kernel has a flaw in it that can cause frequent panic reboots.

it's a common issue and my phone before i rooted it would do it often. after rooting and removing most of my gapps i've never had a problem with it since.

from what i understand from what others have share with me, the problem can pretty much be completely eliminated by installing a new kernel.

i suggest my own kernel of course: http://androidforums.com/merit-all-...erclock-kernel-777mhz-no-apps-no-scripts.html

I need to ask a question before I install. Nothing bad just a little ignorant on my part.

If I wanted to install your blue steel rom would I still need to install this kernel or would this no longer be needed?
I must ask to be on the safe side.... Im quite proud that Ive not been cause of issue with the device so far....and am hoping to continue this. Only way to do this is ask questions.

I admire your work and value your opinion and advice. You guys of the forum are amazing. Looking forward to learning more

Full honeycomb will sadly never be... I can see porting it but building is impossible without replicating the source in your own way (Google never released the src). (I'm saying this purely for information to others, not to put down your efforts at porting)

However, I have built an open src ROM for the avail... but I have no physical way of fine tuning it, seeing as though I have no Z990.

well everyone knows that the honeycomb source was never released

so yes this does prevent building from source because there is no public source

however this does not prevent porting honeycomb as it has been ported to many phones in the past

the phone app does not work correctly though in honeycomb and so it kind of defeats the purpose to port.

But it ports just fine to the merit other than that. The kernel however is where the trouble is. The zte gingerbread kernel source for the merit and the msm Google kernel source need to be merged properly and I've only halfway achieved this

AOSP 2.3.7. It doesn't boot currently but it built...

Stayboogy: I whole-heartedly agree with the kernel differentials.ZTE's source is honestly a mess. Has any other ZTE device made it past GB? That's where I would start, personally.

I've been through most every blade source and revised accordingly. errors out no matter what I've done. and I've done it all I think...

I've also been building kernels for other devices using various compilers in the prebuilt directory and what I've found is that it takes customizing them to get anywhere and that's slightly above my pay grade at the moment. in time in time
