Root Upgraded to android 4.4.4 by accident with twrp

I think the last time I successfully upgraded flashed an ota
Through twrp successfully was when I first got the tablet.
After that I always had to first flash stock recovery first in order to take an ota. I forgot to flash stock recovery and took the ota. When the tablet rebooted into twrp flashed the update successfully.
What changed? Has Google decided to support all recoveries?
Or did twrp change to support ota flashing the conventional way?

I think this was just a patch update, less than 19Mb. If it were a complete new system, recovery, etc. I don't think twrp would work. I also took the update with twrp.
