Root Upgrading from stock froyo to GB on rooted captivate

First let me say Hello! I have a Captivate running froyo that I have rooted and back up with Titanium. Now I would like to ultimately upgrade to one of the developer ROMs for Jelly bean. HOwever, after spending the past two days reading and searching I have managed to become even more confused. Even if I don't need to flash each ROM in sequence (which I'm not sure if I do or not) should I? Is there a very very dumbed down step by step guide to do this? I found a "dummies guide" to upgrade to ICS but it assumes the phone is already running GB and mine is not. I really want to learn how to do this and need someone with patience to help. Thank you in advance!!!

Hi, thanks for joining Android Forums! :D

Can you link the guide that you've found to upgrade to ICS? As far as i'm aware you should be able to go from Froyo to ICS without a problem; should just be a case of backing up all your stuff and current ROM, and then flash an ICS ROM, but I can take a look at the guide and see what it says first.

I'm going to move this into the root section :)

I had very same question as you!

You shouldn't have to go all the way back to stock, although in some cases it helps. What you need to do is if the rom does not include a new kernel as part of the package, that the kernel you have is compatible with the rom or that you flash a compatible kernel at the same time you flash the new rom.

If you want I can help you step by step.

The first thing you'll need to do is tell me what you're running on your phone ... under menu>settings>about phone

Android Version
Baseband
Kernel
Build number

And then tell me which rom you're thinking of using.
