[Verizon] Battery Drain Overnight (in Airplane Mode, no Wakelock)

This doesn't seem to happen every night, but certainly most nights, and it's been going on for about a month. Last night, it drained a ridiculous amount... down to just 3%. And unlike a lot of other threads I've seen with similar issues, there's no wakelock. Nothing shows up as having been running overnight, yet the drain is pretty crazy. Note that the screenshots show normal usage AND overnight/airplane for comparison... and the discharge rate in both modes seems to be about the same.

So is this probably just the battery going bad, or is there some way to determine if there's a less obvious cause?

This is on a Verizon Galaxy Nexus, rooted but stock.

You'll notice that you have the GPS on, wifi on and mobile data is being used and the Android system is causing a lot of your drain. I suspect that a lot of updating of some sort is going on.

Maybe I should have clarified that the screenshots show normal use AND overnight airplane mode, with discharge at about the same rate. You can see usage up until I set it on airplane and go to bed but there's no usage of any kind once I go to bed, which is why I'm confused.

Sometimes a badly written or conflicting app can get stuck and drain batteries.Easiest thing to do for starters,if possible,is to shut the device down, remove the battery for at least 30 seconds and then put it back in and re-boot the device.
If the problem comes back try and remember what programs/apps/sequence you use that may be causing the problem, assuming it's not a hardware fault like a bad battery or battery contact.

HTH :)

I've done that before. This has been going on for a while and doesn't seem to be linked to any specific behavior. I do still have the stock battery (been using a Samsung extended life for a long time and, again, this behavior is only in the last month or so). Maybe I should test if it does it with that battery.

Might take a few nights to confirm, since the current battery sometimes doesn't do it.

What really puzzles me is why the battery life would be fine, even very good, when the phone is not in airplane mode. That seems to be contrary to the battery being bad, because you think it would be crappy under normal use. Why would doing something that should draw less from the battery seem to draw the same, or possibly even more?

It is known that the GNex has bad battery life, it's just what us users that have been on the device for awhile have been used to.

Honestly, getting an extended battery is a good option, I know they make some pretty good 3650mAh ones by like Hyperdrive on Amazon for 20$

Sure. That's why I got an extended battery to begin with. But it still seems strangely counter intuitive to me that the battery gets actually pretty good life when under normal use, but turns to shit overnight in airplane mode with no wakelock. It seems like crappy battery or no, it should always be the other way around.

one way to find out if an app is causing the drain is by running the phone in safe mode.

I'm going to say try the above, though I've never had to do it.

Also, I have had my Gnex for over a year and it doesn't make a hill of beans difference whether I run it with GPS and WiFi on all the time or not.

My first take on this thread was, yes your battery is probably going bad, I know my two are not getting as good as they used to, but it still doesn't explain the better (or same) performance you are getting w/o airplane mode on as opposed to with it on, hence why I quoted the other possible solution to test out an possible 'bad' app.

good luck

Have you installed any battery monitoring apps to see if they can identify the problem?

Better Battery Stats is very useful. Also, GSAM battery monitor which is free. They may be able to help you identify if something specific is causing the battery drain.

I don't think its a bad battery because Android system usage is so high.

I've been using Battery Doctor for quite a while. It's not indicating anything with particularly high usage either.

Honestly, if we can't figure it out you might just want to try a factory reset and start fresh.

Sorry, but make sure to back everything up :(

For now, I've gone with the more pragmatic solution of leaving the phone on wifi overnight. I risk being bothered, but I haven't woken up to an almost dead battery yet.

As above. This is a really strange one.You could set a silent profile timed so you don't get bothered using an app or DS(Deep Sleep Battery Saver) allows me to set timed evening to morning configurations for all week and or weekends.
