Root [Virgin Mobile] New Official VMU Kernel! Possible Update Coming (don't hold your breath)

JerryScript

Android Expert
There is a new kernel version available via Open Source Samsung website, MG5. I'm downloading now to do a diff against the MC1 release and hopefully see what's changed.

Samsung Open Source Release Center
(search for SPH-L300 and you'll see Version MG5 at the bottom)

This could be a prelude to a new firmware release (don't hold your breath). Please, if anyone finds a new update available on their phone, POST HERE BEFORE INSTALLING AND WAIT FOR INSTRUCTIONS TO GRAB THE UPDATE PACKAGE!

By firmware update, u mean 4.3 right?

What they have released so far is new kernel source, with the changes primarily being adding support for KVM, a virtualization machine. This should make things run smoother with better battery life.

Here's a test build of the new Samsung SPH-L300_VMU-MG5 source with the only modification being the cpu uncapped to 1.5ghz.
SPH-L300_VMU-MG5.zip

edit: seems smooth and relatively snappy, gonna rebuild VaeVictus with this as the base and see what OCing it will do. ;)

Both versions (MC1 and MG5) are kernel version 3.0.31
This means no fully working CM build for a while. :(

This is why I like Samsung. Coming from the Motorola Triumph, which never offered anything in regards to updates. I will never buy another Motorola product for this reason.

Even if it turns out to be nothing. Motorola never even released anything like this.
