i want to have my voice mail kick in right away so i can have my phone on without being disturbed how do i do this?

You don't mention what phone or Android version you have, but I'll try my best to answer.
Somewhere in settings, there should be an option for "Do not disturb" or something similar. This will do what you want. Alternatively, you could use the GSM feature code for Call Forward all. Probably the best way to do this is to add an address book entry for "Call Forward" and include three number entries: one to Enable, one to Disable, and one to check Status (e.g., in case you forget which way it's set, or want to verify that your dail code "took").
