Help Why is my Marshmallow app drawer still like Lollipop?

JohnJSal

I've read that one of the changes to Marshmallow was that the app drawer now scrolls vertically (as well as a few other things, like frequently used apps appearing at the top, etc.), but I've had Marshmallow for a couple of weeks on my Nexus 7 (2013) and my app drawer hasn't changed at all (still horizontal, for example).

I'm not really complaining, because I like it this way, but why didn't it change?

My Google search bar is also still gray instead of the new multicolored one. Why didn't this change either?

Thanks!

Are you sure you are on marshmallow? Can you go into settings>about tablet and confirm your software version?

As for the Google search bar, I believe that is an updated version of Google app which I think isn't necessarily only for marshmallow. Can you tell us what version of that app is installed? Should be able to find that information in settings>apps

What phone do you have as well? The new changes only applies to pure Android, like those found in Nexus line and Android One devices. Phones/tablets from Samsung, LG, HTC, Sony, etc all have their own UI overlay and does not use the UI which Google puts on stock Android, hence they won't look like what is usually presented by Google in their previews.

EDIT: Missed the Nexus 7 part. But anyway, it could be that you only got a partial update, or that the features you are looking for are in the settings and are simply not enabled since your device retained current setup.

For the Google Search bar, check your widgets. You may just have to put the new multicolored widget on your homescreen.

I'm running 6.0.1. The only weird thing I can think of as far as updating goes is that I had version 5.1, and I never received the 5.1.1 update. I then received the 6.0.1 update, but I don't think that would have anything to do with it, since the changes I'm talking about are specifically for Marshmallow, and not for Lollipop.

If these are changes to be made in the settings, where would I find them?

Google has been using that same dang launcher since KitKat. Just download Google now launcher and the Google app you'll have the vertical app drawer.

So the stock launcher is not the same as the Google Now Launcher!? Why would they make two different launchers?

Beats me honestly, I have a N7 2013 as well, since KitKat.....and the stock launcher has stayed the same update after update..... Since KitKat...

Hmm, seems weird. People want a stock Android but then have to manually download a different launcher to get some of the new changes?

Any good reasons to switch to the Now Launcher vs. stock?

I honestly don't like now launcher, in all my incessant rom flashing and following setups I always go with nova launcher, which happens to have the option for vertical app drawer and almost every other customization you can think of.

Yeah, I use Nova on my phone. I've been trying to keep my Nexus 7 "clean" so I haven't moved away from the stock launcher yet. I don't see any reason to use Now over Nova if I decide to change. It's just too good.

Well if you already use it on your phone I don't need to tell you how good it is lol I don't see myself using now launcher when nova pretty much does what now is for and more

Nova Launcher is so darned good, why even look for a different one?

I tried the Google offerings just to see what they were about.
They lasted almost 30 minutes and were gone.

I don't know. This still confuses me. Whenever I read an article about the changes made in Marshmallow, they always mention the vertical scrolling app drawer but they NEVER mention having to download a separate launcher to see it.

If the vertical app drawer is a feature of Marshmallow itself, shouldn't it just be there when you upgrade to 6.0? I don't see why installing a separate launcher would be considered a "feature" of Marshmallow.
