Help Wi-Fi Issues

Okay.
Recently I felt like rooting my phone.
I have previously rooted 3 different Samsung Captivates with no problems at all.
They all took approximately 5 minutes.
Today, I tried rooting the device via SuperOneClick, which did not work for some reason. So I browsed around looking for and trying different methods of rooting.
I found this guide on these forums:
http://androidforums.com/captivate-all-things-root/483646-guide-root-official-2-3-5-guide.html

I followed exact instructions and had absolutely no problems. I completed the first half, which involved "I897UCKF1-AutoRoot-DesignGears.tar"
Before finishing with the second half involving "KK4_stock_kernel.tar", I tried updating Superuser on my phone using Wi-Fi as it told me to. However, when i tapped the Wi-Fi turn on button, it went faded green, then bright green as if it were on, then approximately 20 seconds later it shut off. (Wi-Fi connection NEVER ACTUALLY TURNED ON though).

So I never went ahead and finished the stock kernel step as I was worried about what it would do, and what already happened.
But my main issue is the Wi-Fi. How do I fix this?

EDIT: I just thought, would my phone reset when i did the "KK4_stock_kernel" part? Or what would happen?

Honestly i would download kernel kk4 zip format either data or sono via computer... Get the file on the phone... Make sure it's the kk4 zip file and remember the location of it. I next go in recovery mode, choose to flash from zip... Navigate to the kk4.zip confirm... And it will flash once done go back to reboot phone option in the menu.
