Wi-Fi tethering(metropcs )

I'm thinking of buying this phone and installing a custom ROM is there any way to get Wi-Fi tethering for free.

Don't you get tethering/hotspot built-in for free on Metro plans? I use it (usb tethering) all the time, just from the menu. No root needed.
I have also used the hotspot wifi from built in menu, to use for a tablet.

If you mean free - as in old school (more then your data cap allowed on a rooted phone) I dont believe so anymore.
