Am I correct that if I switch to metropcs I can use my phone to tether to my kindle via wifi? do people do this and if so does it work pretty well?

Yep, you can use the native tether app, up to 8 devices can connect, I believe...i have four going simultaneously at times. Make sure that in settings only your devices can connect.
Depending on your plan, you'll get up to 6 gb full speed, very slow afterwards 128?k...
Good thing is you don't get completely cut off after reaching limit.
