won't connect to wifi unless laptop is turned on

my android tablet won't connect to wifi unless my laptop is turned on and connected to wifi
any suggestions why it won't connect on its own? obviously I cant keep carrying my laptop along every where I go so I can connect the tablet.

any suggestions?
